As part of our Test Kitchen (← link) R&D efforts, Hypothetical developed a pair of furniture finish configurators (← link to other configurators ), with the visual assets rendered in CGI. Our goal was to develop the base technology to display a wide variety of finishes to a customer with high product accuracy, accurate shading and reflections for all options and an easy user experience.
We decided to use the epic man-cave Aviator Chair as our subject. We then invented three finishes for the shell and five fabrics for the upholstery to develop the technology for vary two different elements in one product.
Hypothetical’s second furniture configurator was simpler in the user experience, but added a more interesting environment surrounding the product. This illustrates the advantages of using CGI for getting accurate shading and reflections of the product in the environment while keeping the items perfectly aligned between configurations.
