First came our furniture configurators (← link): interactive images that allow a user to choose from a variety of finishes and see how they will look together. They were great fun, but at Hypothetical we always want to go one step further. So we thought “how about an animated configurator?” It turned out to be a great effect and a fun technical challenge. Web browsers have long supported still images with some portions that are transparent. Web design wouldn’t be what it is today without that technology. But videos with transparency still require workarounds to get to them to the widest audience possible.
Hypothetical’s solution was to borrow technology from the days of the Atari and add in modern CGI rendering and web browser technology. The result is a fun scooter configurator that would have been incredibly painstaking to create with traditional video production.
